Arts on Fire

Designed for ages 8–18, this class is perfect for students who want to learn how to draw realistic faces and develop their observation skills. No prior experience is required — just an interest in bringing portraits to life on paper.

What They’ll Learn

In this 7-week course, students will:

• Study the structure of the face, including proportion and placement of features
• Practice techniques for shading, contouring, and adding depth
• Learn how to capture expression and personality in a portrait
• Create a series of portrait sketches leading to a polished final drawing

Why It Matters

Portrait drawing builds patience, attention to detail, and strong technical skills — all essential for advancing as an artist. Students gain not only the ability to draw realistic faces but also the confidence to use those skills in their broader artistic practice and future portfolios.

Instructor Bio

Led by Emma Vincencio, who completed her degree in Fine Arts and Education at York University’s Teacher College. Emma’s gentle and encouraging teaching style makes her especially skilled at guiding young artists-in-training, ensuring every student feels supported as they learn.

End Experience

By the end of the course, students will have completed a final portrait project that demonstrates their ability to apply proportion, shading, and detail — a strong piece to include in their growing portfolio.

These stand-alone enrichment classes let students dive deep into a specific theme or medium outside of the core track. Great as a complement to our Portfolio or Pre-Portfolio programs—or simply for fun!
