[JAN - MAR] Drawing Level 1 - Intermediate Techniques & Observational Mastery | Ages 8+ | Wednesdays 5-6:30pm | 10 Weeks | Portfolio Track

Designed for students who have completed Drawing Foundations or have equivalent experience. This course is ideal for students who are ready to move beyond basic fundamentals and begin developing stronger technical accuracy, refined observational skills, and more sophisticated drawing methods.

What They’ll Learn

In this structured, skill-building Level 1 course, students will:

  • Strengthen observational accuracy through measured drawing, proportion studies, and contour refinement
  • Deepen shading and rendering skills using value scales, cross-hatching, gradation, and controlled light-source work
  • Learn two-point and three-point perspective to create believable structures and environments
  • Explore texture, form modeling, and tonal contrast to create drawings with stronger depth and realism
  • Complete projects including:
    • Detailed still life renderings
    • Proportion and measurement studies
    • Perspective-based architectural or interior drawings
    • Texture and material studies (glass, metal, fabric, wood)

Why It Matters

Drawing Level 1 builds the precision, control, and visual analysis needed for advanced artistic development. Students learn how to interpret complex forms, manage light and shadow with intention, and construct drawings with structural accuracy — key competencies expected in high school art programs, post-secondary portfolio submissions, and professional studio practice. This level marks the transition from “foundational familiarity” to technical confidence and artistic discipline.

Instructor Bio

Led by Emma Vincencio, a graduate of York University’s Fine Arts and Education programs. Emma’s clear, patient instruction and strong technical background make her highly effective at guiding students through more challenging observational and rendering techniques. Her supportive approach ensures students feel both stretched and encouraged as they advance.

End Experience

Students will complete a series of progressively challenging studies — including proportion drills, advanced shading work, and perspective drawings — culminating in a fully realized final drawing that demonstrates accuracy, value control, and confident technique. This final piece becomes a meaningful contribution to their growing portfolio.

What’s Included

✔ All drawing materials provided (graphite sets, charcoal, erasers, blending tools, technical rulers, drawing paper)
